Keith is a 45-year veteran of community pharmacy who spent most of his career in Malmesbury a rural town in the Western Cape. He obtained his B Pharm. degree from Rhodes University in 1974, did his internship and worked in manufacturing before becoming a marketing product manager.
He started his community pharmacy career in 1979 at Wynberg and Rivett’s Pharmacy in Cape Town before purchasing Geard Pharmacy in 1981. He went on to own and sell 5 other pharmacies in Vredenburg and Stellenbosch before completing his career in Malmesbury when he retired and sold the pharmacy in March 2024.
He was a member of the first group of pharmacists who qualified as PCDT pharmacists before obtaining a permit from the DOH in 1991 and practising as such throughout the rest of his career. He successfully completed the bridging course at Potchestroom University and re-registered in 2018 according to the new regulations.
He served as President and is Honorary Life Member and Fellow of the PSSA. He also served as an elected member of the SAPC for 2 terms, where he was first Chairman of the Committee for Informal Enquiry and later the Committee of Preliminary Investigation.
In 1999, when the first discussions about Universal Healthcare started, he decided to be proactive and, in partnership with a Medical Doctor started a Primary Healthcare Clinic in Malmesbury. The clinic employs a full-time Nursing Sister while contracting out the medical and pharmaceutical services to the partners as independent practitioners.
In his spare time, he has for the last 5 years written case studies for a company that produces CPD courses for pharmacists.
