Dr Nirupa Misra, B. Pharm, M. Pharm, PhD

Dr Nirupa Misra qualified as a pharmacist in 1991 and completed a masters degree and a PhD from the University of KwaZulu Natal. She worked as a responsible pharmacist for a retail pharmacy but chose to be a public servant. She was the Pharmacy Manager at King Edward Hospital for five years, moving on to a position as the Principle Technical Advisor in the Essential Drugs Programme for KZN where she also acted as Head of KZN Pharmaceutical Services, providing oversight of the Provincial Pharmaceutical Depot.

She has expertise in pharmaco-economics, antimicrobial stewardship, pharmaceutical management, and project management. She has lectured to pharmacy students throughout her career and is currently an honorary lecturer at the Department of Health Sciences, UKZN.

Dr Misra is currently the Pharmacy Manager at the centralized drug-resistant tuberculosis hospital in KwaZulu Natal. She serves on the Provincial and National committees to enhance tuberculosis management in South Africa (SA) and provided input into tuberculosis guidelines.

She improved access to child-friendly formulations of DR-TB medicine in five provinces in SA and champions active drug safety monitoring and management (ADSM) initiatives, introducing new tools and training the multidisciplinary team. Dr. Misra was appointed as a Who Health Organization consultant on the Green Light Committee mission to Rwanda to assess the National Tuberculosis Programme and strengthen aDSM.

Dr. Misra has presented her work at local and international conferences and has received many awards including the best podium presentation at the 7th SA TB Conference in 2022, the MEC Award for Service Delivery Excellence, an award of Honour by the South African Association of Hospital and Institutional Pharmacists and has been recognised as a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa in 2023.
