B. Pharm, M. Pharm, PhD
Prof Varsha Bangalee is an Associate Professor and NRF-rated researcher in the Discipline of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). She holds a BPharm and MPharm in pharmacoeconomics, a PhD, and additional qualifications in business management, health economics, and pharmacovigilance.
Since joining UKZN in 2011, she has contributed to undergraduate teaching in Pharmacy Practice and coordinates postgraduate pharmacoeconomics courses. Her research focuses on health systems strengthening, including pharmaceutical policy, medicine pricing, and pharmacovigilance. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences.
Prof Bangalee has received multiple research grants and teaching awards. Her work emphasizes leveraging technology to enhance teaching and assessment, fostering student engagement, and addressing the challenges of diverse learning contexts in South Africa. She serves on several UKZN committees and holds executive roles in professional organizations. She is an editorial board member for the South African Pharmacy Journal, an assessor for the South African Pharmacy Council, and an executive member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the KwaZulu-Natal Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and the SAHPRA Pharmacovigilance Committee. Additionally, she is an academic council member for the Harare Institute of Public Health, an academic tutor for pharmacy interns, and a mentor for postgraduate students.
